Our Story

The Mediterranean Bar

Affectionately known as “The Med,” has been a cornerstone of the Aptos, CA community since it opened its doors in the late 1960s. Originally a gritty, no-frills dive bar, it became a beloved local watering hole known for its cheap drinks, pool tables, and welcoming, down-to-earth atmosphere. Over the decades, the bar underwent several modest renovations, including a 2012 update that added flat-screen TVs, modern lighting, and a digital jukebox—shifting its character slightly while preserving its essential neighborhood charm. Today, the Med balances its dive-bar roots with a more polished, sports-forward vibe, serving a diverse crowd from early morning to late at night.

The bar’s history also includes some remarkable moments, including a notable visit by Black Panther co-founder Huey Newton in May 1978. The event—tense and politically charged—has since become a part of local lore, tying the bar to a broader historical narrative. The Med also shares in Aptos’s vibrant cultural scene, as a venue which hosted bands like The Devil Makes Three, whose Americana-punk spirit echoes the bar’s independent energy. With its mix of historical weight, musical resonance, and deep community ties, the Mediterranean Bar remains a unique and enduring institution in Aptos.

Aptos, California

Aptos is a charming coastal jewel tucked between Santa Cruz and Watsonville along California’s Monterey Bay. It blends a laid‑back surf-town vibe with pockets of redwood-covered forest. Its name, meaning “The People” in the Ohlone language, hints at its deep indigenous roots. The town sits on historic lands once granted to Rafael Castro in 1833; later it witnessed booming lumber mills, pioneering glider flights in 1905, and the wholesale logging that shaped the Nisene Marks grove before it was preserved as a state park. Seacliff State Beach, with its iconic SS Palo Alto cement ship, remains a favorite seaside escape just off Highway 1.
