Our Story
The Mediterranean Bar, known to locals simply as “The Med,” has been part of the fabric of Aptos, California since the late 1960s. Long before the surrounding area grew into the coastal destination it is today, The Med opened its doors as a simple neighborhood bar where locals could gather, share stories, and enjoy a drink after a long day.
The bar was founded by Al Fin, whose vision was straightforward: create a place where anyone from the community could feel comfortable walking through the door. In its earliest days, The Med was exactly what a neighborhood watering hole was meant to be—unpretentious, welcoming, and full of familiar faces. Regulars played pool, friends met after work, and visitors passing through Aptos found themselves pulled into conversations with locals who had been coming to the bar for years.
Throughout the decades, The Med became woven into the character of the town. Aptos itself was changing, growing from a quiet coastal community into a vibrant part of Santa Cruz County, but the bar remained a constant gathering place for the people who lived there. Over time it gained a reputation as the kind of place where everyone eventually becomes a regular.
Like many long-standing bars, The Med also accumulated its share of memorable moments. One of the most widely remembered took place in May of 1978, when Black Panther co-founder Huey Newton visited the bar—an event that has since become part of local lore. The Med also played a role in the area’s music scene over the years, hosting live performances from local artists and bands. Among those connected to the bar’s musical past is The Devil Makes Three, whose gritty Americana sound reflected the independent spirit of the place itself.
Despite changes and modest renovations over the years, the soul of The Med has always remained tied to its origins. The bar still carries the spirit that Al Fin created when he first opened the doors: a relaxed gathering place where neighbors meet, friendships grow, and the atmosphere feels authentic rather than manufactured.
Today, The Mediterranean Bar continues that tradition as a neighborhood sports bar and community meeting place. From watching a game with friends to celebrating local events and traditions, The Med remains a place where the history of Aptos lives on—one conversation, one story, and one drink at a time.
